When one is a frequent patron of public transportation, one finds that boredom can set in rather quickly. Therefore, I quickly learned to keep a book on me at all times. I also learned that technical reading or other deep thought texts are not the best choice. The level of noise and distraction on the both the Metra and CTA lines can make attempts at comprehension quite fruitless. Fortunately, this problem coincides with my problem of finding the time to quench my thirst for sci-fi/fantasy and various other works of fiction, which are a much easier read in that environment.
In fact, knowing how much I ride the trains, not only do I always have a book on me, but I have “the queue” at home. As soon as I finish a book, or get close to finishing, I grab the next one in a pile of 4-5 that are waiting to be read. So in order to keep the queue filled, I frequent the local bookstore. Now when I say, “the local bookstore” that refers to the collective chain we know as Border’s. There are four within five minutes of my route on the Red Line (two are pictured above) and one just off the Purple Line. I won’t even start on my locations in the Burbs…. I recently started a new Star Wars Series and since Randolf didn’t have what I was looking for, I stopped at Lawrence, which generally seems better stocked in the SW Universe.
